Why I’m Here and Who I Am

How’s your life?

If you’re like me, the answer to that question seems to change from week to week, day to day, or sometimes even moment to moment! When I evaluate my life, much of the time I find I’m looking at life contingent upon the circumstances of the moment. Do you find yourself there?

Hi, I’m Nina Burgett! By most standards, I’m an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in Texas. But then, I prefer not to measure the evaluation of my life “by most standards”.

I come by this honestly because I had a Dad & Mom who primed my brothers, sisters and me to live life by a higher standard. This standard is not set by people or tradition, circumstances or culture. This standard was not created by my parents themselves. This standard is set by the God of Eternity, Creator God who loves every person so deeply that He sacrificed everything to give eternal life to everyone who will receive that life in Him.

As a young girl, I made the choice to live by the higher standard that only comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Now no  longer a young girl, when I review my life, I imagine a collection of videos…playbacks of various life stages:

  • times I made poor choices and suffered consequences
  • hard times put on me by someone else
  • gaining victory rather than becoming a victim
  • loss of people I loved
  • grief in the middle of life’s struggles
  • going in weak, coming out stronger

…you know...LIFE!

We all have a LIFE. And we all get to choose how we live this life.

When I look back over my life, it’s clear to me that the “higher standard” my parents, Deward & Margie Nell Mullen, modeled in our family is a standard that is lasting and living. It Works! And It Works Long-Term!

That’s why I’m here on this website, writing this blog, featuring extraordinary people and so much more. I want to share life with you!

  • We’ll look at everyday living through a higher standard–from a biblical perspective.
  • We’ll experience the difference of living life on purpose–a higher purpose.
  • We’ll become intentional in our everydays–together.

Where I’ve Been

Besides being a middle-aged woman with an outstanding husband, three daughters and sons-in-law and seven grandchildren, I do have some training that enhances where I’m coming from. Some of my training has been informal, from very wise individuals. Those intentional parents of mine set me up with other adults who were wise and did life well.  Among others, wonderful women like Mona Angell and Sandra Weidner, along with wise men like Fred Weidner and Gaylan Henry poured into me throughout childhood and early adulthood, by how they lived and what they said. My husband, Randy Burgett, lovingly calls out what I call “blind spots” (the shadow parts of me I fail to see) and guides  me to truth. (He loves me too much to allow me to remain stuck in destructive thought patterns.)

Once my daughters were grown and on their own, the Lord led me to attend seminary for a formal degree in Christian Ministry. I will forever be grateful for the high level of education I received from B.H. Carroll Theological Institute (www.bhcti.org). My later-in-life seminary experience served to enhance much of what the Lord had already instilled in me and sharpened skills to discern how to navigate life from a biblical perspective.

As far as work experience, I’ve enjoyed the privilege of serving on staff in local churches as Minister of Equipping, overseeing discipleship programming and pastoral care for men and women of all ages and all stages of life.

What Now?

This is my heartcry: I want you to know Jesus Christ in the very most intimate friendship possible…and that can happen because Jesus Christ wants to be your best friend!

statement of faith

We believe the truths of written Scripture relate to everyday living. Our posts and publications will always be rooted in a spiritual perspective. Whether you have experience with the Bible or this is a new way of thinking, we believe you will find truth for yourself as we explore life together.

These are the Basics:

  • No Other Gods: One True God in 3 Persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit
  • The Son and the Savior: Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, came to earth by virgin birth, lived a sinless life and died a substitutionary death in order to provide salvation for all people who will believe. After death, he was buried, then conquered death by coming alive again. He now lives in heaven, interceding for and supporting those who accept his salvation.
  • People Have a Problem: Human beings are naturally selfish, sinful and need a Savior. Salvation comes by God extending grace to all people and each person expressing faith in God’s great love.
  • The Helper for Life: God’s Holy Spirit is given as a guarantee of the presence of God in each believer and empowers believers to live a life of truth.
  • The Bible is True: The entire Bible is God’s infallible, inerrant love letter to people.
  • The True Church: The one true Church is made up of all believers in Christ
  • Eternity Realized: After death, the believer in Christ lives eternally with God. The non-believer dies eternally without God.

“For the past eight years, I have traveled along beside Nina on our walk with Christ. I have found her to … be a mentor, teacher, and advisor. She knows the Word like no one else I have ever known. She is clear where she stands in what God has taught her through the years, but she never comes across as preachy. She has encouraged me and the other women …to go deeper in the Word, to examine [it], to memorize [it], to ponder [it], and to seal it on our hearts. I find Nina’s style of teaching more like a conversation … she encourages group members to mull over Scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work….

Like a good teacher, Nina allows her students to think, to experience, to discover, and to draw closer to their Lord, and then exchange our insights. I am excited that others will be able to be a part of what Nina has to offer.  The Lord has truly gifted her with teaching.”

“Before I knew Nina, I was active in Bible study and leading but I never really understood the whole mission of women’s ministries until serving with Nina… how to serve the whole woman, how to use hospitality and womens’ love of beauty to relate to women.  She has taught me to thoroughly back up teaching statements with the Word of God.

I learned from Nina how to weed out my personal opinion and to focus on the truth of Scripture as the foundation of our studies. Nina is a great communicator, a discerner of how and when to keep specific Bible studies on track, an impactful teacher and leader.”

“Nina is one of the most incredible women I have encountered in my life. I consider her a mentor, a spiritual “mama,” and a friend. Our paths crossed through ministry and I quickly sensed her deep relationship with the Lord, her love for the Word, and her passion to pour truth into the people around her. Nina’s knowledge of scripture naturally is woven into conversation and I always walk away encouraged. She strives to be surrendered to the Spirit and is full of wisdom. She is the person I would go to with hard life situations and decisions because I trust her. She’s not afraid to be honest, yet she is so gentle and full of grace and poise you can’t help but love her. Nina has left a lasting impact on my life and I’m grateful the Lord placed her in my life!”
